The Great Wall of China is one of the largest building construction projects ever completed. It was built over 2,000 years ago by Qin Shihuangdi, the first emperor of china (221-206 bc) . In Chinese, The wall is Called “ Wan- Li Qang Qeng’ which means 10,000 Li Long Wall (10,000 Li= about 5,000km). It was made for defence against raids by the nomadic people. The longest wall in the world, it is an amazing feat of ancient defensive architecture. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. The wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and platesus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 KM (5,500miles) from the east to the west of China. The Wall is a simple structure, Its built of dirt, stone, and brick. Its height ranges from 15 to 30 feet (5 to 9 m ), with watchtowers rising at regular intervals above it. Its 15 to25 feet (5 to 8 m ) wide. Along the top runs a 13- foot (4m) wide roadway. Behind the wall there are, at intervals, permanent camps for troops. During its construction, the Great Wall was called ‘the longest cemetery on earth’ because so many people died building it. Reportedly, it cost the lives of more than one million people. With a history of more than 2,000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins and have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most alluring attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance.
