Once there lived a king by the name of Satrajit. He had
secured the precious jewel, Syamantaka, from Surya. Satrajit was very
fond of the jewel and always kept it with himself. One day, Krishna
arrived in his court and asked for the jewel, but Satrajit refused to
give it to him.
One day, when Satrajit was out of the palace, his younger brother
Prasena stole the jewel from the safe and wore it during a hunting
expedition. Unfortunately, the jewel fell on the ground when Prasena died
fighting a lion. Jambavan, Sugreeva's minister, found the jewel and gave
it to his son to play.
Satrajit discovered that the jewel was no longer in the safe. When
Prasena did not return he thought Krishna had forcefully taken the jewel
after killing him. When Krishna heard this, he immediately set out to
look for the jewel. On reaching the forest, he found Jambavan's son
playing with it.
Thinking Krishna to be a thief, Jambavcan attacked him, but he soon
recognised him and begged forgiveness. He returned the jewel to Krishna
and also asked him to marry his daughter Jambavati.
Accompanied by his newly wedded wife, Jambavati, Krishna returned
victorious to his palace in Dwarka. One day, he visited Satrajit's court
and returned the jewel in front of everyone.
Satrajit felt ashamed for foolishly accusing Krishna and asked for
mercy. He asked Krishna to marry his
daughter Satyabhama. Krishna married her in a grand ceremony. When it was
time for Krishna to leave, Satrajit also offered him the Syamantaka, but
Krishna refused to accept it. |
