With the resounding of the conch shells, the Mahabharata war
began. Soldiers armed with different weapons ran towards each other.
Bhishma attacked the army with such might that the Pandavas soldiers
shuddered out of fear. Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna and Shuvadra, was
given the responsibility of facing Bhisma. He showered a volley of arrows
on him. In retaliation, the Kaurava warriors surrounded Abhimanyu from all
side. But brave Abhimanyu fought with unflinching courage. Other
Pandava warriors came to help him and the Kaurvas had to step back. The
first day ended with a lot of casualties on both sides. But the Pandava
army suffered major setbacks due to the death of Utar and Shweta, the two
princes of Viratnagar. But both the warriors fell fighting after killing
hundreds of Kaurava soldiers. |
